My photographic life began underwater in 1989. Certified as a scuba diver in 1986 and as a scuba instructor in 1993, I was captivated by the cathedral-like light shining through the kelp and the delicate sea animals I encountered during those early years.

My first warm water dive with a camera was in Little Cayman, during which a beautiful and bizarre world opened for me, creating a passion that I am still exploring. To date, I have completed over 1,100 dives.

I started shooting film with a Nikonos IV A in 1989. Analog photography was very limiting because each dive allowed for only 36 exposures, and I couldn’t see the images until the film was developed.  Digital technology revolutionized underwater photography for me because I can view the exposures while I am underwater.   I can make adjustments while still at the site and produce better images.

I have photographed in many dive locations including New Guinea, The Maldive Islands, Indonesia,The Solomon Islands, Fiji, as well as various countries in the Caribbean and California.

I started photographing wildlife above water because I wanted to capture, preserve and interpret all of the natural world.  Subsequently, wildlife photography led me to landscape photography as the animals’ environment is also critically important and threatened.

I have not been diving since 2018 due in part to Covid.  I am going to the Lembeh Strait off the Island of Sulawesi, Indonesia soon and will resume my underwater adventure.   I plan to also photograph some wildlife and landscapes this year as well and look forward to more underwater photography.
